For many practitioners, the progression in Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) can often feel unclear. With no universally agreed-upon standards for advancement, many schools choose to keep their curriculum vague, leaving students unsure about what’s expected at each belt level. This ambiguity can create frustration for those who want to measure their progress and know how to reach the next stage of their journey.
At Mount Hood Guardians, we believe in eliminating this guesswork by being transparent about our expectations. That’s why we’ve published our curriculum and belt progression criteria, making it accessible to all students. This way, each practitioner knows exactly what they need to work on, empowering them to take ownership of their training.
In line with this philosophy, I’ve also created a comprehensive Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Curriculum book, which provides a clear roadmap for students at every level. This curriculum outlines key techniques, concepts, and drills to help guide students through their journey, whether they’re preparing for competition, self-defense, or personal mastery.
The book serves as an excellent resource for practitioners who want a deeper understanding of what it takes to progress in BJJ, as well as for instructors looking to provide structured, transparent training for their students. By breaking down the progression process, it takes away the mystery and allows students to focus on their growth with confidence and purpose.
